JD Solomon Inc.’s focus on weekly content creation produced satisfaction and disappointment. These are a few of the lessons learned.

Our company targeted one blog post per week in 2023. Our main goal was to see the impact of a more aggressive content creation strategy impacted our business. The sources of the blog posts were the interesting people and projects we encountered throughout the year. As a small business, the actual writing of the posts fell on me.

Our 4 Most Disappointing Blog Posts

#4 What Hurricanes and Fishing Teach Us About Risk and Project Development

The inspiration for this one came while I was surf fishing at North Myrtle Beach. We had just wrapped up a fairly large risk management project, and I received a call to do a risk assessment on a new infrastructure project. Maybe too many beers, but this one seemed like a great idea.

#3 Five Key Enablers for Project Managers to Be Effective Communicators

We watched a project manager do a great job of damage control on a project that had gotten sideways. This one had high expectations for our project management followers. Well, at least that is what we thought.

#2 How Young Professionals Can Build a Facilitation Team and Empower Their Careers

I was hired to do some corporate training to create a better stable of young facilitators. Great result, and I continue to stay close with several participants. The article did not prove successful.

#1 Successful Project Management Software Needs This One Thing!

We did two nice projects on this topic. Evaluating, selecting, and improving capital project software and enterprise asset management software is in our wheelhouse. I thought this would easily be in the top half of all posts for the year. Instead, it was near the bottom.

Some Lessons Learned

Here are some things we take away from this year’s blog effort.

  • There is a 50–50 chance that any inspiration you get while drinking will work out the way you think it might.
  • Content matters, but so does the title, image (or thumbnail), where you do supplemental promotion and even the day of the week.
  • Social media is fickle at best.
  • When you write one blog post per week, 10 to 20 percent will not work out the way you thought.

Looking to 2024

The great experiment of 2023 was fun and insightful. In 2024, we will cut back to one content-related blog post every two weeks instead of weekly. We have other content like company news, outreach events, and videos to fill some of the gap. We learned a lot from 2023.
